宮脇 敦士    Atsushi MIYAWAKI, MD, PhD

2013年、東京大学医学部医学科卒。初期研修後、東京大学大学院医学系研究科 公衆衛生学教室にて、医療政策・応用統計を専攻し、19年に博士（医学）取得。学術振興会特別研究員を経て20年4月より東京大学公衆衛生学教室助教。米国社会科学研究評議会 (Social Science Research Council) Abe Fellow Awardを受けて、21年〜22年までUCLA医学部客員研究員。東京大学ヘルスサービスリサーチ講座特任講師を経て、25年1月〜筑波大学医学医療系 准教授（社会医学）。

健康や医療の質/アクセスに影響する社会の構造や制度、医療のプレイヤーの行動・選好を研究しています。現在の主なトピックとして、（１）医療のoveruse (例えば low-value care)の構造、（２）医療の質や格差のの医師側要因、（３）高齢者のヘルスサービスリサーチ、（４）健康の社会的決定要因に対する公衆衛生政策、を扱っています。日米の公的統計・レセプト/電子カルテデータ・コホート調査・パネル調査を使っています。自然実験などの因果推論を用いることも多いです。これまで行ってきた研究は、Ann Intern Med、Ann Surg、J Gen Intern Med、Ann Emerg Med、Soc Sci Medなどの国際的なコアジャーナルに掲載されています。

Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki graduated from the University of Tokyo in 2013 and began his career as a physician. After completing his residency training, he pursued graduate studies in the Department of Public Health at the University of Tokyo, specializing in health policy and applied econometrics. He earned his Ph.D. in Medicine in 2019. Following the award of a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of Tokyo in April 2020. From 2021 to 2022, he conducted research as a visiting scholar at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, supported by the Abe Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) in New York. Since January 2025, he has been serving as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Medicine, University of Tsukuba.

He studies the structures and systems of society that influence the quality and accessibility of healthcare, as well as the behavior and preferences of healthcare providers. His current research focuses on: (1) the structural factors underlying the overuse of healthcare services (such as low-value care); (2) physician-related factors affecting healthcare quality and disparities; (3) health services research for older adults; and (4) public health policies addressing the social determinants of health. He utilizes a variety of data sources, including official statistics from Japan and the United States, claims data, electronic health records, cohort studies, and panel surveys. His research frequently employs causal inference methods, including natural experiments. His work has been published in leading international journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals of Surgery, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Annals of Emergency Medicine, and Social Science & Medicine.
